Movie Review: “Green Room”

A while back, one of my best friends showed me writer/director Jeremy Saulnier’s film, “Blue Ruin.” It completely blew me away. If you haven’t seen it, do yourself a favor, and change that.

It’s a fantastic revenge film.

My response to that film prompted me to be beyond excited when I found out that Patrick Stewart would be playing a villain in “Green Room,” Jeremy Saulnier’s followup film. Then I found out he’d be playing a skinhead. That blew my mind. Professor X is a skinhead. Fucking Captain Picard is a skinhead. Let that float around your dome a bit.

Based off the way Saulnier presented violence in “Blue Ruin,” I knew there was going to be something to “Green Room.” Man, was I ever right on the money. “Green Room” is a taut thriller that almost makes you feel sick at times. Placing yourself in the shoes of the main characters is a terrifying thought. I’m getting ahead of myself, though.

Let’s start with the plot. The film is focused on a punk rock band that takes a gig at a skinhead bar, just so that they can make enough money to get home. While there, they witness a murder, and shit quickly spins out of control. Of course, during their set, they purposely play a song that they know will piss off the skinheads. Obviously that doesn’t help the punk rock band when things pop off.

The cast here is fantastic, as well. There’s the aforementioned Patrick Stewart, the recently departed Anton Yelchin (RIP), Mark Webber, Alia Shawkat, Joe Cole, Imogen Poots, Callum Turner, Macon Blair (who was the star of “Blue Ruin”), and more! Jeremy Saulnier delivers in a big way again as the writer/director. He is, without a doubt, a filmmaker that people should keep their eyes on.

I’ve been very vague throughout this, but that’s for a reason. I want people to watch the film. I can’t stand reviews that give away too much of a film. I wanted to simply get the plot across, throw a few compliments out there, and then bring it home. If you like horror movies, revenge films, or even straight up thrillers, then this is your movie.

Patrick Stewart is a terrifying skinhead in a film about a punk rock band that runs afoul of a bunch of angry, violent skinheads. The rest of the cast is as good as Patrick Stewart, including the recently deceased Anton Yelchin (RIP). The writer/director Jeremy Saulnier is an extremely talented filmmaker we all need to keep our eyes on.

I hate choosing ratings, but if I had to, I’d give this at least four stars. Don’t miss it!
