We are back for another installment of NERDO DOES MUSIC on this fine Friday. I had to make up for my long absence with a double dose of ROCK. Well, at least one dose of rock. The last song didn’t so much rock, as it grooved. There was certainly a vibe. Anyway, this is all getting away from the point. We’re going to do a little bit of rocking with this piece and have a lot of fun. We’re covering “Hurt No More” by a band called Reluctant Zero.
They are an excellent 4-piece band out of Northern Virginia. Reluctant Zero was formed in September of ’18 by singer and rhythm guitar player Matthew Rector, as well as drummer Christopher Scott. They were later joined by bass player Dave Jones, who helped them power on as a 3-piece. Then in November of 2019, Reluctant Zero welcomed Felix Barca on lead guitar, firmly cementing their fresh but still nostalgic sound.
Nostalgic is right. The music video, first off, stoked all the member berries in me. It made me feel like I was younger, watching a video on MTV (when they still played music). It reminded me of videos by Blink 182, or Bowling For Soup. They always had some fun A-B visual structure to their music videos. I love the boxing match between the Superman and Batman knock offs that make up for most of this video. This was a fun video with vocals and music reminiscent of a ton of bands I love.
I don’t mean that as an insult. The sound truly is fresh in its own way. It doesn’t feel like any one alternative band you might’ve loved, it feels like all of them. There’s a great nostalgic vibe to this for me. Granted, I’m a couple months from turning 32, so I’m old to most of the 18-35 market. However, this definitely resonated with me. The video and song itself put a smile on my face. The music and vocalist reminded me of a band I love called Off With Their Heads. Reluctant Zero brought up a ton of great memories as I listened to this track of theirs.
If you’re a fan of any of the groups mentioned, give this song a chance. As always, I’ll end everything with some links and bio on the band. I like to help get the info as out there as I can manage.
